Against the backdrop of an exotic Greek island, Hill weaves a compelling romance between Greek-German DJ and a gifted young Greek chef. Their lifelong friendship's development into something more intimate might fall into the common pattern of any romance were it not for the intrigue rooted in the cruelties rife in WW II Greece. Erotic, tragic, thrilling and tender, Hill weaves a fascinating story of two complex lovers and the past that threatens their love. Hill writes beautifully and with great style! THis one's a keeper, and I plan to comtinue following this author. 3.5 starsThis story moves between the contemporary love affair between Max and Georgios, two young men who grew up together and fell for each other despite the bad blood between their families, and the historical diary of a ten-year old girl, Georgios’ relative, that documents the myriad abuses perpetrated by the Nazis on the island of Aegina, and her family in particular. The historical story is bleak and lyrical, but the modern day love affair is not nearly so poetic: Max is flashy, self-absorbed, and pushy (to put it politely) and Georgios’ family treats both young men horribly, so it’s hard to know what to hope for in terms of the romance or the resolution of family tension (for the record, I don’t love the way it ends up, if only because it’s too facile, and some people who really really deserve consequences for the way they exploited Georgios don’t pay them). I also had a hard time with the dialog, if only because half the time Max inexplicably talks like he’s escaped from an Oscar Wilde play. I loved the idea of this novel, but for me, there were a few rough edges in execution.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
